Parshat Emor

The Litmus Test

Today, most of the topics that are debated in the world can be placed in the category of apparent truths. The ideas are either right or wrong or good or bad. This is in contrast to the discussions in the academic world where the end result is either true or false, for example is the world round or flat. To prove whether or not an idea is true, really isn’t that difficult. You take out a few books, research the topic and you have an answer.

When it comes to moral decisions, my crystal clear view is but a blurry haze to others. Seeing eye to eye on an apparent truth isn’t easy. As usual G-d solves this problem also. In this weeks Torah portion we are commanded, “you shall not desecrate My Holy Name, rather I should be sanctified among the children of Israel”.
In short G-d is telling us that when we are standing at the crossroads and we can go right or left, no matter what the issue is our measuring stick should be – what will the outcome of this decision be. Will this action cause a Kiddush Hashem, a sanctification of G-d’s name, or will the effect be the opposite. It’s a simple formula to understand, but practicing it; now that’s a challenge.
